I don’t want a love for life (I want a real love)

Love “for life” had its heyday at a time when people lived thirty or forty years. We now live twice as long: does the ideal still hold? The psychiatrist and couple therapist Jorge Daniel Moreno proposes giving up on ideal love, not out of disenchantment, but in order to invest the energy thus freed in a possible love — the one we live with someone of flesh and blood.

Book Yo no quiero un amor para toda la vida (quiero un amor real), Jorge Daniel Moreno, Grupo Editorial Norma, 2010, 189 pages Review by the author himself Translation Complexe Systémique, with the permission of Red Sistémica

“Love for life” had its heyday in the Middle Ages, when life expectancy was thirty to forty years. In those days, a love that lasted, say, fifteen years was more or less possible. An ideal love. Now that we live twice as long, thanks to vaccines and antibiotics, is it still possible to sustain the ideal of love for that long?

In this book Jorge Daniel Moreno puts forward a new formula for approaching romantic relationships: not to look a priori for a love for life, an ideal love, but to put our energy into living and savouring a real, possible love.

The ideals of love do nothing but burden the relationship, make demands of it, force it — and often break it.

Jorge Daniel Moreno

The book proposes to dismantle these preconceptions and to look at the other person not as an ideal complement, but as someone of flesh and blood, with qualities and faults, with whom one can obtain neither more nor less than a possible love: not an ideal one, but one with its feet on the ground — and why not, at times, rolling on it — seeking real satisfaction rather than an ideal that is forever slipping away and hard to reach.
